Air-King

The Rolex Air-King has one of the most storied origins in the collection, tracing its roots to the 1930s and 1940s when Rolex produced a series of aviation-themed references — the Air Tiger, Air Lion, Air Giant — to honor the pilots of the Royal Air Force during World War II. The Air-King became the surviving name of that lineage, settling into the Rolex catalog as a more accessible entry point into the Oyster collection. Early references such as the 5500, produced for decades in 34 mm, are beloved by vintage Rolex collectors for their simplicity and historical character. The model was discontinued in 2014 and dramatically relaunched in 2016 with ref. 116900, featuring a bold black dial, large Arabic numerals, and a distinctive yellow seconds hand — a design that references aviation instrument panels. This current generation is 40 mm, houses the caliber 3131 with Parachrom hairspring, and wears with remarkable presence on the wrist. Pre-owned Air-King references span both eras, offering something for vintage enthusiasts and modern watch buyers alike. DeMesy & Co. has authenticated pre-owned Air-King models in Dallas since 1987.
