Oysterquartz

The Rolex Oysterquartz represents a fascinating and often undervalued chapter in Rolex history — the brand's foray into quartz movement technology during the Quartz Crisis of the 1970s and 1980s. Introduced in 1977 in both Datejust and Day-Date configurations, the Oysterquartz was housed in a sharp, angular, integrated case and bracelet design that stood in deliberate contrast to the rounded Oyster aesthetic. The integrated bracelet, with its brushed and polished angular links, was heavily influenced by the design language of the era — the same period that produced the Royal Oak and Nautilus — and created a look that is now appreciated as distinctly period-correct and collectible. The Oysterquartz Datejust references 17000 and 17013 and the Day-Date Oysterquartz references 19018 and 19028 in two-tone and full gold variants are the most frequently traded pre-owned examples. The caliber 5035 and 5055 quartz movements used were among the most precise Rolex ever produced. Discontinued in 2003, the Oysterquartz now attracts a dedicated collector following who prize its idiosyncratic design and historical context. DeMesy & Co. in Dallas has been buying and authenticating pre-owned Oysterquartz watches since 1987.
