Calatrava
The Patek Philippe Calatrava is the quintessential dress watch, introduced in 1932 under the Stern family's new ownership of Patek Philippe as a timeless round-case timepiece of absolute formal purity. Named for the Calatrava Cross — the symbol of Patek Philippe derived from the knightly order of Calatrava — the watch is defined by its Bauhaus-influenced restraint: a thin round case, a clean white or silver dial with applied indices, and a slim movement that allows the case to achieve an elegance of proportion impossible with thicker calibers. The ref. 96, introduced at launch in 1932, established the Calatrava's proportional standard and is now among the most studied vintage Patek references. Key pre-owned Calatrava references include the ref. 2526 (Patek's first automatic, with enamel dial), the ref. 3520 and 3796, and the modern ref. 5196, 5227, and 6006. The Calatrava houses some of Patek's most refined in-house movements, including the ultra-thin caliber 240 and the manually wound caliber 215. For collectors who prize understated watchmaking excellence over visual complexity, the pre-owned Calatrava is without peer. DeMesy & Co. in Dallas has authenticated pre-owned Patek Philippe Calatrava references for collectors since 1987.
